Hugo Hofstetter (Cofidis) ha estrenado su palmarés en 2018 -y el de su carrera- con su triunfo en la primera etapa del Tour de l’Ain. El francés, de 24 años, ha demostrado que la estructura crediticia tiene más opciones en las llegadas masivas además de las ya conocidas de Nacer Bouhanni y Christophe Laporte. En la meta de Montrevel-en-Bresse, tras 166 kilómetros, segundo ha sido Lorrenzo Manzin (Vital Concept) y tercero Lilian Calmejane (Direct Energie).

Pero el gran protagonista del día, al menos para el ciclismo español, ha sido Isaac Cantón. El manchego del Polartec-Kometa ha rodado escapado durante buena parte de la etapa, primero con Juan Pablo Villegas (Manzana Postobón) y más tarde, cuando el colombiano ha cedido, con Jan Tschernoster y Dimitri Bussard, que compiten con los maillots de las selecciones alemana y suiza respectivamente. Los tres han logrado mantenerse en pie hasta los últimos 30 kilómetros cuando, ante la inminente llegada del gran grupo, Cantón ha intentado la aventura en solitario y se ha marchado, aunque finalmente también ha sido capturado.

En una etapa abocada al sprint, pese a los intentos de los hombres del Direct Energie por dar la sorpresa, Hofstetter ha hecho bueno el trabajo del Cofidis y se ha vestido con el primer maillot de líder.
