Eenkhoorn venció con autoridad.

Pascal Eenkhoorn (LottoNL-Jumbo) se ha adjudicado la tercera etapa de la Colorado Classic. El neerlandés ha superado en el sprint al colombiano Edwin Ávila (Israel Cycling Academy) y  el líder, Gavin Mannion (UnitedHealthCare), que ha sumado segundos de bonificación y consolida su privilegiada posición.

Education First fue el gran animador de la jornada. La estructura de Jonathan Vaughters intentó constantemente provocar el corte bueno que derivara en la fuga del día. Finalmente, lo consiguió en las rampas de la segunda de las tres ascensiones y rompió la carrera en una escapada que prometía un buen futuro para los rosas, con tres hombres entre los siete elegidos: Hugh Carthy, Joe Dombrowski y Daniel Felipe Martínez se unieron a Damien Howson (Mitchelton-Scott), Toms Skujins (Trek), Bryan Sánchez (Holowesko) y Keegan Swirbul (Jelly Belly) para desestabilizar al equipo del líder y hacerse con la primera posición en la general.

Sin embargo, las distancias nunca fueron escandalosas, pese al nivel de la mayoría de los fugados, que se manejaron en torno al minuto y medio durante un buen número de kilómetros. En el pelotón, UHC y Aevolo se unieron para mantener en el radar a los escapados, que conforme se aproximaban a Denver veían su renta menguar por debajo del minuto. El trabajo en el gran grupo -si bien no demasiado numeroso- se unió también Rubén Plaza para Israel, que confiaba en la punta velocidad de Edwin Ávila.

A 12 para meta, aprovechando el arreón para disputar el último sprint intermedio, el pack cabecero se partió y dejó al frente a Carthy, Dombrowski, Howson y Skujins. Pareció que podían volver a entenderse y ampliar distancias, pero no fue así y la diferencia continuó bajando. A menos de tres, con los fugados ya a la vista, Tvetcov (UHC), segundo en la general, saltó del pelotón para unirse al cuarteto, salvar el honor de los azules y evidenciar que la estrategia de EF no había surtido efecto. No sólo eso, sino que se marchó con Skujins a rueda para intentar sorprender. Poco después, lo intentó Coté (Silber), pero finalmente la etapa se resolvió al sprint y triunfó Eenkhoorn. El colombiano Ávila fue segundo tras completar el último kilómetro sin el sillín de la bicicleta, como informó su equipo tras la conclusión de la etapa.
