La 52ª edición de la Volta Algarve ha arrancado con un golpe de autoridad de Paul Magnier. El joven talento francés, punta de lanza de Soudal, se ha adjudicado la primera etapa de la ronda portuguesa tras imponerse en un esprint masivo de altísimo nivel en las calles de Tavira. Magnier, que venía de superar unos problemas de salud que condicionaron su inicio de temporada, ha cubierto los 185,6 kilómetros desde Vila Real de Santo António con una solvencia propia de un veterano, otorgando así a la escuadra belga su primer triunfo parcial en esta edición de la prestigiosa prueba lusa.
El desarrollo de la jornada estuvo marcado por una escapada de varios hombres que, aunque animaron el paso por el interior del Algarve, nunca llegaron a poner en jaque la hegemonía de las escuadras de los velocistas. Con el pelotón rodando bajo un control férreo, la atención se centró en la gestión de las fuerzas para un final que se preveía técnico y ratonero. Soudal asumió la responsabilidad en el tramo final, protegiendo a Magnier de las rachas de viento y asegurando una posición de privilegio antes de la entrada en el casco urbano, mientras los trenes de Alpecin y Lotto buscaban desesperadamente su espacio en la vanguardia.
En la recta de meta, Magnier desplegó una potencia incontestable que dejó sin respuesta a sus principales rivales. El ciclista galo supo elegir el momento preciso para lanzar su ataque, superando por una bicicleta de distancia a Jasper Philipsen, jefe de filas de Alpecin, y a Arnaud De Lie, el baluarte de Lotto. Esta victoria no solo refuerza la confianza del equipo en su joven estrella, sino que también sirve como advertencia de cara a las próximas clásicas de primavera, donde Magnier aspira a ser uno de los nombres propios del pelotón internacional tras su irrupción meteórica la pasada campaña.

Paul Magnier (Soudal): «Es una sensación increíble conseguir esta primera victoria de la temporada aquí en el Algarve. El equipo ha hecho un trabajo fenomenal durante todo el día para mantenerme protegido y colocarme en la mejor posición para el sprint final. Después de un inicio de año algo complicado por la enfermedad, este triunfo me da muchísima confianza para las próximas clásicas. Ganar siempre es especial, pero hacerlo ante corredores del nivel de Philipsen o De Lie demuestra que el trabajo de invierno ha dado sus frutos».

Una carrera por etapas que se disputará del 18 al 22 de febrero, continuando dentro de la categoría UCI 2.Pro, y entre cuyos favoritos hay hombres tan relevantes como Almeida (UAE) o Juan Ayuso (Lidl), que afronta así su primer gran reto con su nuevo equipo.
