El pelotón se estaba tomando las cosas con muchísima calma en la segunda etapa del Herald Sun Tour, pero un espectacular incremento del viento en los últimos 25 kilómetros propició que la carrera se volviese completamente loca, pillando en fuera de juego al líder tras la primera jornada, Ed Clancy (JLT-Condor), que vio cómo su momento de gloria apenas duraba 24 horas.



El aire, que sopló en esa parte final de la carrera de manera lateral, provocó que el pelotón se rompiera en diversos grupos. El primero de ellos consiguió, a falta de poco más de diez kilómetros para la línea de meta, dar contacto con la fuga de seis hombres que había protagonizado el día. Daniel Whitehouse (InterPro Stradalli), Brad Evans (Mobius Bridgelane), Liam Magennis (EF-Education First), Oliver Martin (Brisbane Continental Cycling Team), Kane Richards (Team McDonalds Downunder) y Mathew Ross (KordaMentha Real Estate – Australian National Team) vieron como sus sueños se truncaban ya muy cerca de la línea de meta.

De ese grupo cabecero surgió el danés Lasse Norman Hansen (Aqua Blue) para llevarse el sprint, con su ya conocida bicicleta de un solo plato, que le daba el triunfo de etapa y, gracias a esos cortes provocados por el viento, vestirse con el maillot de líder de la prueba australiana.
