1ª Tour Holanda: Merlier aniquila a Kooij

Tim Merlier se impuso este miércoles en la primera etapa en línea del Tour de Holanda, disputada entre Dordrecht y Dordrecht sobre 118,5 kilómetros. El velocista flamenco superó por escaso margen a Olav Kooij en un final muy ajustado que arrancó el neerlandés de Visma para batirle sobre la línea, logrando su decimosexto triunfo de la temporada; segundo consecutivo de Soudal en la ronda de Países Bajos.

Después del prólogo en el Zuiderpark de La Haya, el pelotón afrontó una jornada corta y completamente llana por la región de Alblasserwaard, con paso por los emblemáticos molinos de Kinderdijk. Pese a los intentos iniciales de fuga —con Javier Serrano, Jelle Bouma, Niek Hoornsman y Luke Verburg al frente—, el grupo nunca llegó a tomar más de un minuto de ventaja, controlado en todo momento por los equipos de los velocistas.

A 22 kilómetros del final, la escapada fue neutralizada, y poco después Jan-Willem van Schip agitó la carrera con un ataque que dio pie a un grupo de diez corredores en cabeza, entre ellos Arnaud De Lie y dos hombres de Picnic. La maniobra no prosperó, pero sirvió para repartir segundos de bonificación: Cameron Rogers y Jakob Söderqvist aprovecharon para situarse cerca del liderato virtual, amenazando el maillot naranja del británico Ethan Hayter (Soudal).

En los metros finales, el esprint fue tan rápido como caótico sobre el puente de Zwijndrecht. Daan Hoole, Mike Teunissen y Christophe Laporte encabezaron la aproximación, pero fue Merlier quien lanzó el golpe definitivo para batir a Kooij por escasos centímetros. El belga continúa imbatible en las llegadas rápidas, mientras que Hayter perdió el liderato general. Ahora será Jakob Söderqvist quien porte el maillot naranja para Lidl.

Fabio Jakobsen (Picnic): «Estoy contento de estar aquí, al menos una carrera antes del invierno. Fue una fractura desfavorable. Una placa enorme encima, muchos escombros en el medio. Puedo empezar aquí, pero no en mi mejor forma. El objetivo es acumular kilómetros. Es una pena, porque mi forma estaba mejorando. Sin la caída en el Tour de Francia, sin duda podría haber vuelto a competir por los primeros puestos. Así me sentí, al menos. Ahora solo se trata de ayudar a los chicos y mantener el motor en marcha, y luego disfrutar del invierno. Me tomaré unas vacaciones cortas y luego seguiré adelante. Países Bajos, la nación ciclista, necesita una carrera como esta. Me alegra que haya vuelto. Todos prefieren correr aquí, en su país, que en China. Para mí, es fantástico poder hacer este trabajo aquí. Entreno aquí la mitad del tiempo y puedo soñar con las carreteras. Prefiero esprintar que hacer este trabajo, pero por ahora, intento disfrutarlo».

Tim Merlier (Soudal): «Hoy estaba completamente agotado en el sprint, fue muy duro porque estoy un poco fuera de forma. Estuve al límite todo el tiempo y mi victoria se debe más a mi ritmo que a mis piernas. Para ser sincero, fue una etapa muy peligrosa, con muchos obstáculos que causaron mucho nerviosismo en el pelotón, así que no solo estoy contento con la victoria, sino también con haberme mantenido intacto».
