La 37ª edición del Tour de l’Ain arrancó este miércoles 6 de agosto con una exigente etapa inaugural entre Feillens y Lagnieu. El recorrido de 163 kilómetros, mayoritariamente llano, reservaba un ascenso al Col de Portes (14,6 km al 5,5%) situado a 26 km de la meta.
El equipo Visma asumió el control en esa subida, imponiendo un ritmo fuerte que seleccionó el grupo y propició los ataques de sus líderes. Primero lo intentó Ben Tulett y luego Cian Uijtdebroeks, formándose un trío en cabeza junto al francés Nicolas Prodhomme (Decathlon). Los tres coronaron con más de 30 segundos sobre un pequeño pelotón, pero la persecución liderada por Groupama en el descenso permitió cerrar el hueco.
Ya en los últimos metros, la formación gala aprovechó el trabajo previo y ejecutó a la perfección el sprint en grupo reducido, logrando un doblete con Tom Donnenwirth como ganador por delante de David Gaudu.

Tom Donnenwirth (Groupama): «Sí, fue como se suele decir, un tablero negro. Todo salió a la perfección. Solo faltaba tener las piernas. En la cuesta, lo gestionamos bien. Tenía que dosificar mis fuerzas. Las abejas (Visma) picaron muy pronto en la cuesta y me dolían las piernas. El objetivo era no llegar al límite para poder dar un gran sprint en la llegada. Y lo conseguimos. Estoy muy agradecido a todo el equipo que ha trabajado para mí y ha confiado en mí. Mi primera victoria profesional hoy es una gran alegría. Ha sido un éxito rotundo. David [Gaudu] viene de una buena pretemporada en altitud. Quiere ganar confianza antes de la Vuelta. La general será para él. Además, Yvon [Caër] nos dijo esta mañana en el autobús que era importante que consiguiera puestos en el sprint, porque no hay bonificaciones. Si se decide por los puestos, siempre es bueno estar delante. Él ha quedado dos puestos detrás de mí, así que es todo un bonus para los dos días que vienen».
