1ª Tour Luxemburgo: Strong triunfa un año después

1ª: Miércoles 20 septiembre. Luxemburgo-Luxemburgo (Kirchberg), 156 kms

Un año después de su primer triunfo profesional en el Tour of Britain, Corbin Strong volvió a alzar los brazos en el Tour de Luxemburgo. Al igual que en aquella ocasión, esta victoria le sirve para situarse como primer líder de la carrera, tras una primera etapa que hizo una primera selección en la general. El neozelandés, que se quedó a las puertas del éxito en el reciente GP de Quebec, se impuso por delante de Soren Kragh Andersen, que esprintó por el costado contrario al resto de rivales, el español Alex Aranburu, que mantiene el buen estado de forma mostrado en las clásicas canadienses; y Diego Ulissi, que se vio algo encerrado en los metros finales.

La carrera se decidió en el ascenso final al Kirchberg, donde se produjeron algunos ataques de hombres peligrosos com Felix Gall, Victor Campenaerts o Richard Carapaz, no consiguiendo evitar una resolución al sprint. Anteriormente, Alexis Guerin, Michael Woods, Kamiel Bonne y Gregor Muhlberger habían probado una tentativa similar en el ascenso a la Cote de Stafelter con mismo resultado. Los otros protagonistas del día fueron Lennert Teugels (Bingoal), Vito Braet (Flanders) y Mats Wenzel y Oliver Knudsen (Leopard), quienes integraron la fuga del día y que fueron neutralizados antes de estas dos subidas finales. En el apartado de abandonos, destacan las retiradas por enfermedad de importantes escaladores como Thibaut Pinot, David Gaudu y Jakob Fuglsang.

Corbin Strong: «Es una sensación muy agradable ganar, el equipo ha trabajado de forma excepcional hoy. He estado en muy buena forma toda la temporada, pero nunca logré la victoria, así que es una muy buena sensación conseguirla hoy. Fue una etapa realmente buena para mí, sabía que siempre estaría al límite, pero si podía sufrir y estar ahí en la meta, tendría muchas posibilidades de ser el más rápido. No fue fácil y tuve que esforzarme mucho en la última subida, pero afortunadamente estaba en una buena posición. Los chicos hicieron un trabajo perfecto todo el día y pude terminarlo».
