Arnaud Tendon, el suizo de 23 años del equipo continental francés Van Rysel, dio la gran sorpresa en la inauguración del Tour de la Provenza (2.1) tras derrotar en la meta a su último compañero de la escapada del día, el italiano Mattia Bais (Polti), resistiendo el empuje final del pelotón que llegó a apenas 2 segundos de la pareja en medio del aguacero del sur galo. El estadounidense Luke Lamperti (EF Education) fue el mejor del grupo con Fran Muñoz, compañero de Bais, como mejor español en la 15ª plaza.
Bais y Tendon fueron desde el principio protagonistas en la primera fuga de esta edición junto a David Zanutta (XDS continental), Bailey McDonald (Novo Nordisk) y Jonas Walton (CIC). El grupo les dejó hacer y su ventaja creció hasta los 2:45 controlados por el Ineos del reaparecido Carlos Rodríguez, ausente desde julio tras su caída en el Tour de Francia. Tendon, Walton y Bais dejaron a sus compañeros a 60 kilómetros de meta con 1:40 de diferencia con EF Education ayudando al grupo británico de Brailsford.
Las caídas en el seleccionado pelotón dio oxígeno al trío fugado que se quedó en dúo tras ceder Walton. Y así se presentaron en meta truncando el habitual guion y demostrando que las fugas a veces tienen éxito, el segundo del ya líder Tendon -profesional desde 2021- después de su estreno en la 2ª etapa del Tour de Montbeliard en 2022.
