Solo Dorian Godon (Ineos) impidió que Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull) fuera el primer líder de la 105ª edición de la Volta a Catalunya, prueba decana por etapas del calendario español. Y es que el campeón de Francia -nuevo fichaje del equipo británico- cogió perfectamente la rueda del belga en el siempre exigente último kilómetro de Sant Feliu de Guíxols donde hay que saber calcular las fuerzas. No fue así el caso de Tom Pidcock (Pinarello) que se lanzó demasiado pronto y acabó pagándolo en meta, aunque bonificando en la llegada como sus dos compañeros, especialmente Evenepoel que toma ventaja. De esta forma, segundo éxito para el galo -tras el de París-Niza-, residente en Girona y conocedor al dedillo del final y que partirá este martes vestido de blanquiverde.
El extriatleta Baptiste Veistroffer (Lotto), Josh Burnett (Burgos), Tyler Stites (Modern Aventure) y los hermanos Hugo Aznar (Kern Pharma) y Unai Aznar (Euskaltel) fueron los componentes de la única fuga del día casi desde el inicio y que acabó a 12 kilómetros de meta con el neozelandés Burnett como último superviviente, después del trabajo de Ineos, NSN, Baharain y Red Bull mayoritariamente
El UAE se encargó de tomar el mando del grupo cada vez más reducido en la revirada carretera costera con el fin de proteger al portugués Joao Almeida. Lo mismo hizo en primera persona el gran favorito Jonas Vingegaard en el final del descenso previo a la localidad de salida y meta. Allí el danés del Visma dejó a los más rápidos, pero se vio sorprendido por el arranque de Pidcock y después Evenepoel en su pugna por la general final que se dilucidará el domingo en la montaña olímpica de Montjuïc.

Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull): «Aunque no fue un sprint típico, fue un esfuerzo de un minuto, así que algo más difícil que un sprint típico. Tenía la sensación de que siempre estaba bien posicionado. Cuando miré por encima de mis piernas, vi que tenía un hueco. Esperaba que saliera bien. Pero en los últimos 75 metros, alguien me adelantó. Fue realmente emocionante. Es una pena que me hayan ganado aquí, igual que hace tres años. Entonces hice más o menos el mismo sprint. Es un buen comienzo de semana. Hoy me he sentido bien tanto en los tramos de bajada como en los de subida. Mi aceleración también ha estado bien. Así que las primeras señales son positivas. Ahora vienen dos días en los que, relativamente hablando, podré llegar tranquilo. Después, serán cuatro días a toda máquina».
Tom Pidcock (Pinarello): «La etapa transcurrió tal y como esperábamos: fue realmente dura a lo largo de la costa. No paró de subir y bajar en todo momento y tuvimos que lidiar con diferentes direcciones del viento. En el sprint decidí simplemente ir a por todas. También era importante situarse bien en cabeza, ya que era un final muy técnico. Tuve que empezar mi sprint un poco pronto. Sin embargo, si pierdes velocidad en esta llegada, estás perdido de todas formas. Creo que acabo de hacer el mejor sprint de mi carrera, así que, en realidad, estoy muy satisfecho», afirmó Pidcock. «La gente siempre dice que soy un corredor para este tipo de llegadas, pero esto es realmente un sprint de pura potencia… Estoy contento con mi estado de forma y con las sensaciones sobre la bicicleta. Esta mañana aún comentaba que me había recuperado bien de la Milán-San Remo, pero mis piernas aún se sentían un poco pesadas al inicio de la etapa. Sin embargo, después fue mejorando cada vez más», dijo a Eurosport.
Jonas Vingegaard (Visma): «Ha sido un final un poco salvaje, pero así son las cosas. Solo intenté mantenerme en cabeza en el descenso, y eso salió bien, así que fue un buen día. Es un final duro. Es cuesta arriba, así que también hay que rodar con ello de alguna manera. Pero no voy a arriesgar la vida por ir a por la victoria. Todo salió bien».
Josh Burnett (Burgos): “Ha sido un día estupendo en la escapada para empezar la semana aquí en Cataluña. Para mí es muy especial correr en un lugar de España en el que me siento como en casa, con algunos amigos animándome en la carretera. ¡Espero que haya más momentos así esta semana!”.
