Solo Matthew Riccitello impidió la victoria del reaparecido ayer Carlos Rodríguez -inactivo desde julio tras caerse en el Tour de Francia- en la cima de la nevada Lure. El flamante fichaje estadounidense del Decathlon galo -procedente del Israel- reaccionó ante el ataque del andaluz del Ineos a 3000 metros de meta y después superarle en un cerrado sprint en la línea de meta, lo que sucede a Tendon como líder de la ronda francesa 2.1 UCI.
Diego Sevilla (Polti), Mathis Le Berre (TotalEnergies), Esteban Foucher (Groupama), Baptiste Gillet (Nice), Declan Irvine (Novo Nordisk) y Gustav Wang (XDS continental) compusieron la fuga del día que llegó a tener 4 minutos de ventaja. Pero el Ineos del líder español pasó a reducir diferencias con la ayuda posterior del Decathlon. Un conjunto que quebró el pelotón a 16 kilómetros del final aprovechando el viento de costado lo que provocó la neutralización de la escapada 3 kilómetros después.
El seleccionado grupo de favoritos inició el puerto final compacto a 11 kilómetros de la cima lanzado por la pareja del conjunto británico Axel Laurance y Andrew August, reciente vencedor de etapa en Comunitat Valenciana. Brandon Rivera -oro colombiano contrarreloj- cogió el relevó a sus compañeros hasta llegar la ofensiva de Carlos Rodríguez a 3800 metros del final. Pero Matthew Riccitello y no así su colega Aurelien Paret-Peintre resistió a un Rodríguez resignado al verse rebasado en la meta.

DECLARACIONES
Matthew Riccitello (Decathlon): «Empezar la temporada con una victoria, no podría haberlo hecho mejor. El equipo estuvo perfecto todo el día, manteniéndome en una buena posición. Estoy muy contento de haberlo conseguido, es un gran comienzo con el equipo. Sabíamos que teníamos dos cartas que jugar en esta subida: yo, si era una subida muy dura, y Aurélien Paret-Peintre, si era un grupo reducido en el que él pudiera hacer el sprint. Cuando Carlos Rodríguez se lanzó, lo seguí, y sabía que Aurélien estaba muy cerca detrás, así que solo tuve que esperar un poco en la rueda y esprintar en la línea. Hicimos un trabajo perfecto como equipo. Mañana será sin duda un día estresante, pero tenemos un equipo fuerte aquí para mantener este primer puesto».
