2ª: Viernes 25 abril. Benia de Onís-Pola de Lena, 144 km

La Vueltina llegó a su segundo día de competición con una etapa montañosa entre Benia de Onís y Pola de Lena. Un encadenado de cuatro puertos en su desenlace compuesto por los altos de la Casilla, la Colladiella, Cueña y Carabanzo protagonizarían la jornada. Iván García Cortina, gracias a un poderoso ataque después de ir filtrado en una fuga de más de 120 kilómetros, venció en su tierra: Asturias. El ciclista de Movistar vuelve a la senda de la victoria pasados 3 años de su logro en el Gran Piemonte.
Un grupo de cinco unidades conformó la escapada. Gª Cortina (Movistar), Gómez (España), Johansen (UAE), Schmidt y Sommer (ambos del MyVelo) viajaron en cabeza de carrera hasta el Alto Cueña donde UAE animó la prueba proponiendo una ofensiva con Morgado, Pericas y Soler. Después del abandono de Steff Cras por una caída en el descenso de la Falla de los Lobos, líder de la prueba hasta hoy, el conjunto emiratí tenía el ánimo de filtrar al catalán en cabeza de carrera para definir la general.
Por arriba, la fuga se comenzó a desmoronar hasta que sólo quedaron Cortina y Johansen a un minuto aproximadamente Soler, perseguidor hoy. Al ciclista de Vilanova i la Geltrú trataron de acercarse De la Calle (Burgos) y Fernández (Caja Rural).
Una vez coronada la última cima del día, el Alto de Carabanzo, Iván García Cortina apretó el ritmo para marcharse a 7 kilómetros de la llegada. Le seguía, a pocos segundos, Julius Johansen. El corredor telefónico, que conoce la zona, hoy se movió a la perfección; mostrando una gran lectura de carrera. Cortina atacó en el momento más indicado para terminar de fulminar al danés de UAE al esprint en Pola de Lena en una jornada marcada por la fuerte lluvia. Marc Soler logró llegar tercero. Mañana portará el maillot de líder.

Iván García Cortina (Movistar): «Conozco bien estas subidas, son las carreteras donde siempre entrenaba. Tuvimos mucha ventaja sobre el pelotón y poder rematar así es fantástico.»
Marc Soler (UAE): «Desde el principio salió una escapada de seis con Johansen ahí para nosotros. Unos cuantos equipos empezaron a perseguir con mucho ritmo y en la bajada de la primera subida empezó a llover mucho, lo que complicó la carrera. Hubo varias divisiones en el grupo y en la subida al puerto de primera me fui en solitario. Johansen iba delante cubriendo a Cortina, siempre por detrás, consiguió un muy buen segundo puesto. Yo fui tercero y me puse de líder. Steff Crass sufrió una caída en uno de los descensos con la carretera muy mojada, una lástima, porque no es la manera que me gusta liderar una carrera. Le deseo una pronta recuperación. El objetivo ahora será mantener el liderato e intentar algo con Morgado y Covi en la etapa de mañana«.
