La tercera etapa del Tour Down Under volvió a caer del lado de la velocidad y sirvió para confirmar el buen inicio de temporada de Ineos, que con esta de Welsford ya suma dos triunfos parciales en la prueba australiana. En un final resuelto al esprint, Welsford levantó los brazos por delante de Tobias Lund Andresen (Decathlon y Lewis Bower (Groupama-FDJ), en una llegada masiva en la que los principales hombres de la general entraron con el mismo tiempo y no hubo cambios por cortes.
Tampoco hubo cambios reseñables en la clasificación general, que sigue encabezada por Jay Vine, con su compañero en UAE Jhonatan Narváez a seis segundos y ya un Mauro Schmid, que está a 1:05. Con el ecuador de la prueba acercándose, UAE mantiene a dos hombres al frente y marca territorio antes de los días decisivos, mientras que nombres como Adam Yates (a 1:23) se mantienen en la pelea en una general que ya presenta diferencias serias.
En clave española, la jornada fue tranquila y sin incidencias para los corredores de Movistar, metidos en el pelotón en un día pensado para sprinters. Gonzalo Serrano volvió a mostrarse en posiciones delanteras (17º en la etapa) y en la general se abre un escenario interesante para el equipo: Javier Romo es el mejor situado, 14º a 1:28.

Sam Welsford: «Estoy encantado. Fue una etapa muy dura y tuvimos que luchar muchísimo cuando nos vimos en la parte de atrás. En la última subida me quedé atascado y llegué al límite, pero tenía a Jack Haig conmigo; me tranquilizó y me dijo que tuviera paciencia, que volveríamos. Es maravilloso tener compañeros así, que creen tanto en mí después de una temporada tan difícil como la que acabo de vivir, y ganar esta etapa, en un día que no me venía del todo bien, es algo que me llena de alegría»
