La primera llegada masiva del Tour de Francia 2026 estuvo marcada por el desorden, con una caída a 6 kilómetros de meta desatando el caos tras un desarrollo relativamente tranquilo. En el guirigay despuntó un velocista debutante en esta carrera y muy esperado tras granjearse un buen palmarés en el resto de calendario: Olav Kooij (Decathlon), notablemente más rápido que Max Kanter (XDS) y Tim Merlier (Soudal) en la recta final.
Pese al rosario en meta, no hubo diferencias en la general, que continúa encabezada por el noruego Torstein Traeen (Uno-X). Por lo demás, la jornada estuvo protagonizada por Baptiste Veistroffer (Lotto), quien se presentó en sociedad en el marco de su debut en la Grande Boucle con una cabalgada de 144 kilómetros en solitario que le valieron el subjetivo premio de la combatividad.
181 corredores tomaron la salida en la quinta etapa, que constó de 158,3 kilómetros entre Lannemezan y Pau sobre un trazado prácticamente plano salvo por una sucesión de repechos en el tercio final, a las 14:16. Nada más darse el banderazo de salida, Baptiste Veistroffer (Lotto) arrancó la moto para marcharse en solitario y construir una renta que alcanzó los 3:40 registrados en el kilómetro 21 sobre un pelotón controlado por Louis Vervaeke (Soudal), que velaba por los intereses de Tim Merlier, y Silvan Dillier (Alpecin), en favor de Jasper Philipsen. En una jornada moderadamente calurosa, el Jabalí Bretón mantuvo un buen pulso con el pelotón, fomentando su leyenda de especialistas en escapadas. Veistroffer mantenía una ventaja de 2:10 sobre el grupo principal al paso por el sprint intermedio de Vic-en-Bigorre (SI, km 113,5), donde Max Kanter (XDS) y Mads Pedersen (Lidl) lideraron el paso del pelotón.
144 kilómetros de escapada para Veistroffer
Una vez franqueada la Côte de Baleix (3ª, km 132,7) con apenas 35” de margen sobre sus perseguidores, Veistroffer sería atrapado a 14 kilómetros de meta (esto es: tras 144 de escapada). Entretanto, el oro británico Fred Wright (Pinarello) y Kasper Asgreen (EF Education) trataron de saltar del pelotón marcados por Valentin Paret-Peintre (Soudal) aprovechando la cota; no obstante, fueron atrapados rápidamente.
La aproximación a la llegada masiva se embarulló a 6 kilómetros de meta, con una caída en la parte delantera del pelotón que no tuvo grandes damnificados (Alex Molenaar, el más afectado, pudo llegar a meta) pero sí propició varios cortes y mucho caos. De él surgió XDS que lanzó el sprint pero vio a Olav Kooij destacarse para batir a su bala alemana, Max Kanter. Victoria muy significativa para el velocista neerlandés en su debut en la Grande Boucle, que además llega después de un inicio de año marcado por los problemas físicos.
Este jueves, el pelotón del Tour de Francia encarará de nuevo los Pirineos en su sexta etapa, que recorrerá 186,2 kilómetros entre Pau y el circo glaciar de Gavarnie-Gèdre, incluyendo las míticas ascensiones al Col d’Aspin y el Tourmalet.

La etapa más selectiva del viaje pirenaico combina lo clásico con lo inédito. Es muy posible que se produzca una batalla entre los favoritos del Tour en la ascensión al Col d’Aspin y posteriormente al Col du Tourmalet, siempre que decidan lanzar sus maniobras principales antes de los últimos cuarenta kilómetros de la etapa. De lo contrario, la decisión se tomará entre los mejores escaladores de una escapada en el magnífico escenario del circo de Gavarnie, al que se llega tras una subida larga pero suave: 18,7 km con una pendiente media del 4%.

DECLARACIONES
Olav Kooij (Decathlon), ganador de la quinta etapa: “Es increíble haber conseguido esta victoria. He tenido que superar un par de etapas duras y esperar a este día para disponer de mi primera oportunidad de esprintar en el Tour de Francia. Este triunfo significa mucho para mí. Estoy contento de haber recuperado este nivel tras una primavera bastante difícil, en la que tuve que seguir creyendo en mí mismo a pesar de muchos contratiempos. En realidad, basta con que unas pocas personas crean en ti para afrontar momentos así. Estar hoy aquí, contando con el apoyo del equipo, era todo lo que podía pedir. Hicieron un gran trabajo. Fue una etapa bastante tranquila hasta el final; y, en situaciones así, ya sabes que el sprint será frenético, sobre todo al principio de una gran vuelta, cuando todo el mundo está todavía muy motivado. En los últimos kilómetros logré abrirme camino por mi cuenta: encontré la rueda adecuada y, al ver la línea de meta, lancé el sprint con todas mis fuerzas. Disfrutaremos de esta victoria. Quedan muchas etapas en este Tour, pero seguiremos adelante e intentaremos dar lo mejor de nosotros cada día. Por supuesto, aún quedan muchas oportunidades por delante, pero primero hay que llegar vivo a esas etapas; así que iré día a día”.
Torstein Traeen (Uno-X) líder: «No sé bien qué pasó en los últimos kilómetros; hubo una caída y terminé en el suelo. Pero, en general, todo va bastante bien. Fue un día agradable, lo disfruté bastante; pudimos divertirnos un poco y vivir una etapa tranquila. Mañana será un día duro, sin duda; sólo queda esperar y rezar para tener buenas piernas. No sabemos si podremos mantener el maillot amarillo. Tadej es Tadej, Jonas es Jonas; los dos están fuertes, y rindiendo muy bien».
Max Kanter (XDS), 2º en la etapa: «El equipo ha hecho un trabajo increíble durante todo el día. Han hecho todo lo posible para facilitarme la tarea, reponiéndome los bidones en cada momento e intentando mantenerme fresco. Al acercarnos al final, intentamos mantener la calma sin dejarnos desbordar. Creo que lo hemos gestionado bastante bien. Aunque, claro, no fue nada fácil. Teníamos un plan inicial, pero tuvimos que adaptarlo un poco en los últimos instantes porque la carrera era muy irregular. Todo el mundo quería estar en cabeza debido a los numerosos tramos urbanos. Al final, creo que lo hemos hecho bien. Está claro que no es un mal resultado, pero siempre queda un regusto un poco amargo cuando acabas segundo».
Baptiste Veistroffer (Lotto), el más combativo: “Tenía ganas de disfrutar, y eso es lo que he hecho desde el kilómetro cero. Lo pensé un poco y, de inmediato, me lancé. Estar aquí es una oportunidad increíble. He disfrutado mucho a lo largo del día. Es un gran privilegio y un enorme orgullo lucirme frente al público francés, en la carrera más importante del mundo, con todos los pueblos decorados, las casas adornadas con flores, la gente haciendo picnics al borde de la carretera… Es un sueño para cualquier ciclista subir al podio del Tour, tanto para profesionales como para aficionados… No hay nada mejor que esto, así que estoy muy orgulloso de mi actuación. Estos días ya había estado escapado… pero por detrás del pelotón, porque me había descolgado para ayudar a mi líder Arnaud De Lie. Vendrán más días para escaparme por delante. Con el estado de forma en el que me encuentro, quizás tenga que ser un poco más selectivo porque creo que estoy en disposición de conseguir un gran éxito”.
Mathias Vacek (Lidl), líder de los jóvenes: “Sabía que iba a ser un día más tranquilo que los anteriores, y procuré disfrutarlo de principio a fin. Muchos ciclistas se acercaron a felicitarme por la etapa de ayer, y eso fue muy agradable. Ha sido un día fantástico vistiendo el maillot blanco, y tengo muchas ganas de afrontar la siguiente etapa. El ambiente dentro del equipo es magnífico. Ayer logramos conquistar dos maillots en una sola etapa, cumpliendo nuestros objetivos. Ahora debemos intentar mantener el maillot verde de Mads hasta París. Por mi parte, lucharé por conservar el maillot blanco el mayor tiempo posible. Sé que se me dan bien las subidas; confío en mis dotes como escalador, ya que rendí a buen nivel en las etapas de montaña de la Vuelta a Suiza. No obstante, esto es el Tour de Francia y nunca se sabe qué puede pasar. Mañana intentaré seguir a los escaladores y gestionar bien mi ritmo en la subida al Tourmalet. El simple hecho de vestir el maillot blanco durante un par de días ya supone un gran éxito para nosotros”.
Mads Pedersen (Lidl), líder por puntos: “Marqué más puntos que Jasper Philipsen y Biniam Girmay en el sprint intermedio y, a 100 metros del final, pensaba que también les iba a sacar unos cuantos puntos más en meta… ¡pero me remontaron! Ha sido un día decente, después de un par de etapas muy duras. Hemos corrido en modo ‘control de daños. Me he enterado de que han habido caídas, pero no las vi. Por lo que sé, todos están bien, y eso es un alivio. Son cosas que pasan. En cuanto a mañana, no sé cuál será la estrategia del equipo. Estaría bien conseguir 25 puntos más en el sprint intermedio, pero ya veremos si eso forma parte del plan».
Alex Baudin (EF Education), líder de la montaña: “Ha sido un día muy bonito. Me encanta llevar el maillot de lunares. Puedo escuchar a los aficionados gritar mi nombre desde la cuneta; y encima hacía menos calor que ayer. Sólo he tenido que apretar en la cota para cazar un puntito con ayuda de mis compañeros, pero no ha sido un gran esfuerzo. Mañana me tocará sacar al escalador que llevo dentro. Espero tener buenas piernas, porque no va a ser fácil entrar en la escapada dado que los primeros kilómetros son muy llanos”.
