5ª Tour Gran Bretaña: Wellens controla la etapa y sella la general

Nils Politt cerró el Tour de Gran Bretaña 2026 con una victoria en solitario en la quinta etapa. El UAE dominó una jornada en la que aseguró el triunfo de Tim Wellens en la prueba británica. Entre las tres ascensiones puntuables, concentradas en veinte kilómetros, primero Netcompany-INEOS y después UAE aprovecharon el viento para formar abanicos y seleccionar el pelotón.

De ese movimiento surgió un grupo de ocho corredores en el que UAE colocó a cinco representantes. Con Wellens protegido y la general bajo control, el equipo emiratí comenzó a mover sus piezas durante las dos vueltas finales al circuito de Earlston. Politt lanzó el ataque definitivo a ocho kilómetros de la meta. El alemán abrió una diferencia que sus perseguidores no consiguieron neutralizar pese a varios contraataques. Cruzó la llegada en solitario y completó la exhibición de su equipo.

Florian Vermeersch resistió en el grupo perseguidor y terminó segundo, a seis segundos de su compañero. Filippo Ganna ganó el esprint por la tercera posición. Wellens concluyó octavo, aventajó con claridad a su principal rival, Lewis Askey, y confirmó su victoria en la clasificación general.
