Catorce y once años después Alejandro Valverde ha vuelto a proclamarse ganador de la Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, el primero con tres amarillos en las 69 ediciones, otro dato histórico a su ya dilatado palmarés. Lo hizo en 2004, repitió en 2007 y lo ha vuelto a hacer en 2018, con dos victorias de etapa incluidas. Casi mejor imposible en 7 días de competición tras su regreso desde la lesión de rodilla en el pasado Tour de Francia, ya olvidada.



En la última jornada, entre Paterna y Valencia y en que la lluvia dio una pequeña tregua a los ciclistas, el triunfo ha correspondido a Jurgen Roelandts (BMC), tras superar en un sprint atípico -hubo caída en la empapada curva final del campeón belga Naesen– a Danny Van Poppel (Lotto NL), el primer líder en Oropesa. La escapada del día, con seis corredores y encabezada por, de nuevo, Kwiatkowski, nunca logró alejarse más allá del minuto y medio gracias al control de Movistar en el pelotón, que llegó agrupado a la capital del Túria, a pesar del intento final del excampeón del mundo de persecución, Stefan Küng.
