El Tour de la Provenza ha coronado, por tercer año consecutivo, a un ganador colombiano. Nairo Quintana ha reeditado su triunfo del año 2020 imponiéndose en la etapa reina con final en la Montagne de Lure. El ciclista del Arkéa-Samsic atacó a 4 kilómetros del final y acabó soltando a un Julian Alaphilippe que no terminó con buenas sensaciones y solo pudo ser 2º en la general final. Movistar lo probó con Iván Sosa, pero fue rebasado en meta cuando iba a finalizar 2º en la etapa. Precisamente fue superado por Mattias Skjelmose Jensen y su compañero Matteo Jorgenson, que luchaban por el tercer escalón del podio, que quedó en manos del danés.
El transcurso hasta el puerto final en el que se decidiría todo fue tranquilo, con una fuga de cinco ciclistas que llegó a tener más de siete minutos de ventaja. Nicolas Debeaumarché (St. Michel-Auber), Luke Rowe (INEOS), Romain Combaud (DSM), Alexis Gougeard (B&B Hôtels) y Jonathan Couanon (Nice Métropole) superaron sin dificultades los dos ascensos previos al Col de Buire de segunda categoría.
No hubo que esperar a que llegaran las primeras rampas de la Montagne de Lure para que Gougeard fuera el primero en ceder, tras el trabajo realizado en fuga en días previos. En el pelotón Astana y Arkéa aceleraban el ritmo pensando en sus líderes y bajaban la desventaja hasta los dos minutos. Tratando de ganar posiciones, a punto estuvo de irse al suelo el campeón del mundo, Julian Alaphilippe. El francés tuvo que salirse a la cuneta, pero logró mantener la bicicleta en equilibrio.
Combaud aceleraba de inicio en la subida final, llevando consigo únicamente a Debeaumarché. En el pelotón comenzaban a descolgarse los hombres rápidos al acelerar el ritmo en la aproximación los equipos TotalEnergies, liderados por Manzin. Groupama-FDJ tomaba el relevo en la ascensión y Bruno Armirail imponía un elevado ritmo, enfilando al grupo. El francés de DSM atacaba de nuevo en cabeza y, esta vez sí, se marchaba solo en busca de una victoria casi imposible, ya que su ventaja era de apenas medio minuto.
Después de 6 kilómetros de trabajo, volvía a entrar Total en las primeras posiciones del grupo, que se acercaba a la segunda mitad del puerto, más dura que la inicial. Arkéa no quiso esperar e hizo casi un lanzamiento para el ataque de Nairo Quintana. Alaphilippe se colocó a rueda del colombiano, mientras por detrás perseguían Iván Sosa y Gebreigzabhier, aunque el eritreo cedió unos metros y se puso a trabajar para los dos compañeros que llegaban por detrás.
Ante la ausencia de Ganna en las primeras posiciones, Alaphilippe se colocaba como líder virtual, pero no tenía buenas sensaciones y era superado también por Sosa. Quintana ampliaba su diferencia, pensando en la victoria en la general, donde partía con algunos segundos perdidos. Alphilippe quedaba a cola del grupo de los corredores del Trek, donde ni siquiera podría luchar por las bonificaciones.
Nairo Quintana alzaba el brazo en meta, proclamándose bicampeón de la prueba francesa. Sosa, por su parte, llegaba justo de fuerzas a los metros finales y era superado por Mattias Skjelmose Jensen (2º) y Matteo Jorgenson (3º), que saltaban del grupo perseguidor y lo superaban sobre la línea. El mejor español del día fue Rubén Fernández (11º) y, en la general, Óscar Rodríguez (16º).

DECLARACIONES
Julian Alaphilippe: «Podía haberlo gestionado mejor, pero aun así estoy muy contento. Era una subida bastante adecuada para mí, un esfuerzo regular en el que se iba muy rápido, pero creo que me he equivocado al intentar seguir a Quintana. Quizá debería haber subido a mi ritmo y esperar hasta el último momento. Sin embargo, estoy contento de haberme puesto a prueba y de haberme divertido. En la final exploté, creo que se notó, pero él fue más fuerte de todos modos, así que no me arrepiento. Así que estoy muy contento con esta primera carrera mía. Sinceramente, no esperaba estar a este nivel. Ahora espero seguir en esta dirección. Como dije al principio de esta carrera, aún quedan algunas semanas para los objetivos más importantes, así que estoy satisfecho por el momento». Sus próximas carreras son Faun Ardèche (26/02), Drome Ardèche (27/02), Strade Bianche (5 marzo), Tirreno-Adriático (7-13 de marzo) y Milán-Sanremo (19 de marzo).
Matteo Jorgenson: «Era un final muy duro para mí y he tratado de mantener un ritmo constante, siempre dentro de mis límites. En el final básicamente iba siguiendo la rueda de Trek, que llevaba varios compañeros alrededor de Skjelmose, que iba justo por delante de mí en la general. Tal y como iba la carrera, tenía que estar pendiente de él, seguirle y la verdad es que en el final iba ya al límite. Afortunadamente, el ritmo de Trek era mi ‘ritmo máximo’, y era aguantar ahí y, en el sprint, dar todo lo que tuviese. Él ha sido mejor en la llegada y no había más… Ha sido un buen día. Estoy safisfecho. No pensaba que fuese a ir así, soy alguien muy corpulento, con más peso… así que creo que tengo que estar contento. Sí que siento que este 2022 ha sido una mejora importante para mi cuerpo. Al final, 2021 había sido mi primera temporada ‘real’, ‘completa’ como corredor. Aquí en Europa mucha gente tiene la oportunidad de hacer 50-60 días de carrera con 15, 16 años. Yo hasta 2021 no he podido cubrir una temporada de 60-65 días de competición, y eso el cuerpo lo ha notado. Ya desde que pude descansar este invierno y comenzar a hacer un bloque de temporada consistente lo he notado mucho, y espero seguir mejorando paso a paso. La próxima para mí debería ser París-Niza. Es un objetivo importante, tengo cerca de tres semanas para prepararlo y quiero llegar bien a esa cita».
