Travis McCabe y Gavin Mannion (UnitedHealthCare) han rematado con éxito la Colorado Classic y han dado al equipo estadounidense sendas alegrías en su larga agonía que va encaminada -si nadie lo remedia- a la desaparición. El primero se ha adjudicado al sprint -con la línea de llegada en el mismo punto que ayer- en la etapa que cerraba en Denver la edición de 2018 de la prueba norteamericana, mientras que el segundo se ha hecho con el triunfo absoluto tras defender su liderato conseguido al vencen en la contrarreloj de la segunda jornada. 

Con un recorrido totalmente llano -8 vueltas a un circuito de 14,6 kilómetros que combinaba el trazado urbano por la capital del estado y el parque de la ciudad- la etapa estaba llamada a tener poca historia. Marcharon en fuga James Piccoli (Elevate), Taylor Phinney (Education First), a los que se unieron Luis Villalobos (Aevolo) y Edward Anderson (Hagens), bien controlados por el pelotón, conducido por UnitedHealthCare, el equipo del líder.

A 40 kilómetros para meta la escapada ya había dado todo de sí, por más que Phinney pretendiera lucirse ‘en casa’ rodando en la cabeza del grupo algún kilómetro más. Lo probó Nicolas Zukowsky (Silber), pero ni Rally ni Jelly Belly estaban por la labor de dejar marchar al joven canadiense. En el sprint final, McCabe ganó con autoridad ante Ty Magner (Rally) y Joseph Lewis (Holowesko) con el anhelo de que el año que viene UHC -o su heredero- siga rodando por Denver.
