3ª París-Niza: Bennett puede con Ewan

Tercera etapa y tercer triunfo para un velocista en la París-Niza, la ronda francesa del UCI World Tour. Si Dylan Groenewegen -noveno, pero conserva el amarillo- dominó de diversa formas las dos primeras llegadas, Sam Bennett ha quebrado el dominio del holandés en un sprint masivo en el que irlandés del Bora ha superado al australiano Caleb Ewan (Lotto) y al holandés Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck) y donde los españoles no han aparecido. Luis León Sánchez, el mejor en meta, sigue siendo el primero en la general tras el corredor del Jumbo y Michal Kwiatkowski.

Una etapa en la que el viento en contra fue protagonista, pero no tanto como la víspera, pero que sí causo caídas como las que involucró al dorsal 1, Marc Soler o a Domen Novak (Bahrain) que tuvo que abandonar la carrera. Así hasta que Thomas De Gendt (Lotto), Tao Geoghegan Hart (Sky), Olivier Le Gac (Groupama), Tim Declercq (Deceuninck), Reto Hollenstein (Katusha), Anthony Turgis (Direct Energie), Kevin Reza (Vital Concept) y Ramunas Navardauskas (Delko) hicieron el primer intento en el km 32, cazados en el 38 ante la peligrosidad de Turgis en la general.

Navardauskas insistió junto a su compañero de equipo Alessandro Fedeli, el farolillo rojo. El grupo les dio el visto bueno y los dos obtuvieron una ventaja máxima de 5:35 en el kilómetro 49. El pelotón, liderado por los corredores Jumbo y Lotto, esperaba pacientemente el final mientras lentamente cerraba la brecha con los fugados, poco antes de que el enfermo Fabio Aru (UAE) abandonara. Los corredores del Delko galo vieron como su aventura acaba a 38 kilómetros del final.

Un estrechamiento en la carretera por un puente causó otra montonera con Soler, Simon Yates (Mitchelton) o Miguel Ángel López (Astana) obligados a perseguir al grupo. El pelotón se reagrupó a 20 kilómetros para el final, Kwiatkowski bonificó y el sprint fue inevitable con la sonrisa de Bennett -su 35º triunfo UCI como profesional- sobre Ewan.
