Stefan Küng hizo buenos los pronósticos y es el primer líder del Tour de Suiza (World Tour) tras apuntarse la contrarreloj individual inaugural, especialidad en la que es el vigente campeón de Europa. El corredor del Groupama francés lo hizo sobre sus habituales carreteras de entrenamiento superando a su compatriota y tocayo Bisseger (EF) en 4 segundos y en 12 al italiano del Deceuninck, Mattia Cattaneo. De esta forma Küng obtiene su primer éxito en una cronometrada de la primera división, su tercera del año tras la general de la Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, la 19ª de su carrera y la 13ª 2021 del grupo de Madiot.
Julian Alaphilippe fue el mejor de los aspirantes al triunfo final si es que el francés se lo toma en serio 19 segundos del vencedor y en quinta plaza. Diez segundos después acabó Schachmann y doce Carapaz, por lo que el ecuatoriano del Ineos se posiciona para relevar a Bernal y Porte en la sucesión de éxitos del conjunto británico.
Mención aparte para los neerlandeses Mathieu Van der Poel y Tom Dumoulin. El campeón de su país (25º a 38″) regresa para preparar el Tour de Francia tras su incursión en la Copa del Mundo de BTT, mientras que el excampeón del mundo de la especialidad regesaba al ciclismo tras su decisión de su cese de actividad temporal. Dumoulin fue 16º en su primera carrera desde el pasado 27 de octubre cuando terminó la 7ª etapa de la Vuelta a España. Mader, Sivakov, Urán, Fuglsang, Rui Costa, Soler (1:06 en su vuelta), Poels, Woods y/o Chaves (1.36) ya van por detrás.

Stefan Küng: «Estoy muy contento. Había hecho una preparación óptima para la contrarreloj. Veía que cada vez estaba mejor y fui a la salida con mucha confianza. Así es como pude marcar la diferencia. No tomé demasiados riesgos porque tenía el control y estaba conectado con mi bici. Había analizado todo el recorrido, cada tapa de alcantarilla, cada detalle que podía hacerme ir más rápido, porque estaba seguro de que no iba a llegar a mucho. Veremos cómo va la etapa de mañana, que es difícil al final. Intentaré mantener la camiseta el mayor tiempo posible. Lo más importante para mí era ganar una etapa».
Julian Alaphilippe: «Estoy contento, ha sido una bonita contrarreloj, muy técnica en la primera parte y una segunda parte más rodadora donde era un poco mejor para los corredores que tienen mucha potencia, y ahí es donde he perdido algo de tiempo creo. Pero me lo he pasado bien, es un buen comienzo. No empecé con eso en mente. Sólo quería disfrutar, tomar buenas trayectorias y esforzarme al máximo. Me he divertido y el resultado es satisfactorio. Sabía que iba a ser complicado ganar, pero lo he dado todo y estoy deseando que llegue mañana. Me encantaría ganar una etapa, sería bonito. He trabajado bien, acabamos de salir de una concentración, es importante volver a la pista antes del Tour y si hay una oportunidad con un buen final y las piernas están ahí… Me gustaría ganar una etapa, sería bonito».
Tom Dumoulin: «Las sensaciones fueron buenas, pero al final me quedé un poco corto. Estuvo bien, pero todavía tengo que mejorar un poco. He notado en la segunda parte de la contrarreloj que ya no tenía potencia. La sensación fue buena, pero al final me quedé un poco corto. Me hundí un poco. Es lógico, creo. También me costó acostumbrarme de nuevo a las ruedas y los neumáticos, pero intenté ir a tope. Todavía no estoy en mi mejor momento, pero tampoco lo esperaba. Estoy feliz de haber vuelto y estoy disfrutando de las carreras de nuevo. Sin embargo, esta mañana estaba un poco nervioso. Fue agradable estar de vuelta, pero también fue un día emocionante, un poco como el primer día de clase. No empecé con grandes expectativas. Termino muy cerca y esto me da la oportunidad de seguir avanzando. Quiero estar a tope en los Juegos Olímpicos, para la contrarreloj. La preparación para la Vuelta a Suiza fue corta, lo sabía. Esta semana quiero aprovechar para despedirme, dar un paso adelante y descubrir algunas áreas de mejora».
